It is prohibited for a person who is involved in a traffic accident or whose conduct has caused a traffic accident to leave the scene of the accident if:
in that accident, to his knowledge or which he must reasonably suspect, another person has been killed or another person has sustained bodily injury;
in that accident, to his knowledge or which he should reasonably suspect, damage has been caused to another;
thereby, as he knows or should reasonably suspect, leaving another person who has sustained bodily injury in that accident in a helpless state.
The first paragraph, preamble and points (a) and (b), shall not apply to a person who, at the scene of the accident, has duly provided the opportunity to establish his identity and, insofar as he was driving a motor vehicle, also the identity of that motor vehicle.
Het is degene die bij een verkeersongeval is betrokken of door wiens gedraging een verkeersongeval is veroorzaakt, verboden de plaats van het ongeval te verlaten indien:
bij dat ongeval, naar hij weet of redelijkerwijs moet vermoeden, een ander is gedood dan wel letsel aan een ander is toegebracht;
bij dat ongeval, naar hij weet of redelijkerwijs moet vermoeden, schade aan een ander is toegebracht;
daardoor, naar hij weet of redelijkerwijs moet vermoeden, een ander aan wie bij dat ongeval letsel is toegebracht, in hulpeloze toestand wordt achtergelaten.
Het eerste lid, aanhef en onderdelen a en b, is niet van toepassing op degene die op de plaats van het ongeval behoorlijk de gelegenheid heeft geboden tot vaststelling van zijn identiteit en, voor zover hij een motorrijtuig bestuurde, tevens van de identiteit van dat motorrijtuig.
